More about the neighborhood
Hyde Park was initially developed in the late 1800s as one of the first prestigious neighborhoods on the (then) outskirts of Austin. Initial development efforts in that regard failed, but then the neighborhood saw a boom again during the 1920s and 1930s that catered to the middle class. As a result, Hyde Park houses are characteristic of the bungalow movement. When it saw a second boom in the 1980's, many original houses began to undergo remodel, addition, and new development.
Hyde Park is one of the few neighborhoods in Austin set on a true grid. As a result, it is easy to navigate, popular with cyclists and foot pedestrians, and one of the most popular destination neighborhoods in and around Austin. Its streets are lined with highly mature trees and it has integrated retail development rather seamlessly, in ways few other Austin areas have. The population is a diverse mix of families, couples, singles and student, with much of 38th street and southern Speedway being heavily devoted to student housing. Hyde Park is known for its progressive roots and has a highly active Neighborhood Association dedicated to the preservation of the neighborhood.
