North Central Austin

The areas due north to about seven miles north of downtown Austin were originally residentially developed between 1900 and 1960. As such, there is much accompanying well-seated retail along the main northern thoroughfares, Guadalupe, Lamar and Burnet. Development closer into town in the Enfield neighborhood was some of the earliest and development in Austin. Neighborhoods north of Brykerwoods and Rosedale grew in the 1930's and 1940's, and just north of that Allandale and Crestview Brentwood were part of the post-war boom.

During the late 1970s and 1980s, residential pockets approximately 10 miles Northwest of downtown Austin, began to spring up. A northern business commercial center near the apex of Loop 1/Mopac and Route 183 continues to grow and provide commercial services to this area.

The areas immediately north of downtown are itermittently hilly, but beyond that much of the terrain due north of Austin is relatively flat, or rolling. Only once you venture West of Mopac does the area become hilly, into the terrain commonly known as the "Texas Hill Country"
