South Central Austin includes those neighborhoods south of downtown within 10 miles of the city center:

The neighborhoods immediately south of downtown of Travis Heights and Boldin  were initially built between the 1920s and 1960s. Over the years, many changes to the area have occured in both residential and commercial development. As little as 15 years ago, the area immediately south of downtown- those neighborhoods of Travis Heights, Boldin and Barton Hills - were considered undesirable and run-down. Today, these neighborhoods represent some of the most popular real estate in Austin, offering easy access to downtown as well as the retail in the popular thoroughfares of Congress, South First, and South Lamar avenues. The neighborhoods immediately south of town are known for their progressive attitudes.

Further to the south, past 290 and Ben White, Austin has seen much development since the 1970's and 1980's. The more suburban neighborhoods here offer a vast array of experiences and price ranges, from affordable homes under $200,000 in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, to the gof communities of Circle C ranging up to $700,000.

Most of the terrain south of downtown offers rolling hills, but some neighborhoods south and slightly west- particularly those along the Barton Creek Greenbelt- are highly hilly.
